DADEV A23ST (MAC/PC)

14-02-2003 : The A32ST is released : Soft Knee, Hard Knee and Variable Mu unique mastering tool.

The Mastercomp is a Limiter/Compressor unit designed for mastering and tracks compression.

Most compressors on the Creamware platforms are based on the basic hard knee atoms delivered by Creamware in their development kit. You can change their look or write pages of blabla, there are only a few peoples that have the possibility to create new atoms, and doing new algorithms.

The A23ST Mastering Compressor is something new : it is both an Hard Knee, Soft Knee and variable MU processor. To create such an emulation of hardware that cost more than $4000, it is necessary to create a good combination of several added polynomials, to achieve a typical transition curve of a photoresistor or a variable-mu design.

Hard Knee : a basic compressor does not affect the signal until it has exceeded the threshold volume. At this point, delayed only by the attack time, it fully apply the compression selected by the user. The type of compression is known as Hark Knee compression. This may be sufficient for overall level control, but  the effect becomes too obvious on more heavily compressed signals at the front of the mix.

Soft Knee : a smoother compression can be obtained using Soft Knee compression. This Applies an increasing level of compression gradually to the input signal, as the signal level approaches the Threshold level. This ensure the transition from uncompressed signal to compressed signal is far less noticeable.

Variable-Mu : as you probably see, this compressor does not offer any side chains. In fact the side chain is handled by the variable-mu processor. The compression action is constantly re-biased by the vacuum tube rectified side-chain control level which cause this level to smoothly change its gain... The first to introduce this technique is the vintage Fairchild 670. Since, Manley are the ones who are doing the best compressors based on this technique. The Manley Variable-Mu Stereo compressor is used in almost every mastering studio...

The association of limiter compressor add more punch, more db, but add more security. A23ST does not emulate any vintage unit, it has been carefully tested in studio to get a very subtle tool, adapted to any kind of music. A23ST is the ideal complement to the Multicomp. They can together answer to every dynamic needs with an high level of quality.
